Jeff Blake of Columbia Wedding Photos in Columbia, SC, has been a professional newspaper photojournalist for over a decade. You see his photos every day in The State, South Carolina's largest newspaper. Now, have him document the most important day of your life.
What is a wedding photojournalist? Traditional wedding photographers pose the couple at every stage along the way, often interrupting the flow of the day to direct the couple to do this, or do that. Photojournalists, on the other hand, document the action, capturing the moments as they happen.
For newspaper assignments, photojournalists never direct the action; the only posing or directing we do is when photographing a portrait. The lighting might not always be perfect with a photojournalist, but the moments and emotions captured are much more real, and the couple is able to enjoy the day with limited distractions. Even more importantly, the photos are an accurate reflection of the day, and not the preconceived ideas of a photographer. And yes, we still shoot all the group photos you want!
Another important distinction between traditional and photojournalistic wedding photography is the pricing model. Traditional wedding photographers charge a smaller price up front, but retain the rights to all photographs and require the couple to purchase all prints through him or her, at a greatly inflated price; this is where the photographer really makes their money. On the other hand, wedding photojournalists usually charge more up front, but many (including us) give the couple a disc of the photos, allowing the couple to take the disc to their neighborhood photo finisher to have unlimited prints made at 30-60 cents per 4x6 (or any other size) for example, rather than several dollars for a single 4x6. In addition, most of our packages include a 4x6 print of every imaged photo and several enlargements.
Most packages also include an iPod Touch loaded with your photos; a large mounted canvas print; a web gallery of all your imaged photos so family and friends can view them, and for their convenience if they like, order prints directly from the web gallery (they are hand-toned and printed at one of the best photo labs in the country, at prices similar to a local photo lab, not the inflated price a traditional wedding photographer would sell them for).
